Special Stem Attachments

Here’s a breakdown of some special stem types used on casters—such as plain stems, ladder stems, and pipe threaded stems—and why you might choose them for specific applications:
1. Plain Stem
Description: A smooth, round, unthreaded stem.
Usage: Slides into a matching hole or socket, often secured with a set screw, friction fit, or adhesive.
- Simple and cost-effective.
- Common in light-duty furniture or carts with pre-fitted sleeves or inserts.
- Allows for quick installation and easy replacement.
2. Ladder Stem (Plan Stem)
Description: A stem with a series of ridges or “rungs” along its length, resembling a ladder.
Usage: Locks into matching detents or clips inside a socket, allowing for multiple height settings.
- Provides height adjustability.
- Ensures secure, non-rotating fit.
- Common in medical equipment, instrumentation carts, and modular furniture.
3. Pipe Threaded Stem (e.g., NPT)
Description: A tapered thread (typically National Pipe Thread – NPT) used to screw into pipe fittings or threaded sockets.
Usage: Screws into metal frames, machinery, or structural tubing with internal threads.
- Provides a tight, vibration-resistant fit.
- Ideal for heavy-duty, industrial, or permanent installations.
- Can be sealed with tape or compound for added security.
These stem types offer specialized functionality that goes beyond the standard grip-ring or threaded stems, making them ideal for custom equipment, precise height control, or high-strength industrial use.
