Introduction

In today’s material handling industry, ergonomics has become a crucial focus—and for good reason. Each year, businesses lose significant revenue due to employee downtime and injuries caused by inefficient handling practices. Recognizing this, companies are increasingly prioritizing safer, more efficient methods to protect their workforce and bottom line.

At Caster Technology, headquartered in Garden Grove, California, with over 40 years of experience, we are committed to delivering high-quality caster and wheel solutions. In partnership with industry leaders like RWM, we provide innovative products designed to improve efficiency and safety in material handling operations. One standout innovation is RWM’s Automated Push/Pull Test Machine, which ensures optimal caster and wheel performance tailored to our customers’ unique applications.

Revolutionizing Testing with RWM’s Push/Pull Machine

RWM has developed a state-of-the-art testing system to accurately measure the force required to push or pull a cart equipped with specific caster and wheel combinations. This testing process provides critical data to help Caster Technology recommend the ideal setup for each application, ensuring the best rolling performance.

The machine operates with a test cart guided by rails to prevent lateral movement. Using an electric motor-driven chain system, the cart simulates push and pull motions, while a load cell captures precise force measurements. The test floor, coated with a specialized polyurethane finish, mimics real-world factory conditions. Multiple tests are conducted to account for varying caster orientations and load capacities, with results averaged for accuracy.

Detailed Testing Process for Reliable Results

Each test includes seven runs per condition, with the highest and lowest values excluded to calculate an average. Testing covers three key caster orientations:

  1. Zero-degree (straight line)
  2. 90-degree alignment with casters in the same direction
  3. 90-degree alignment with opposing casters

For each orientation, push and pull forces are measured under four or more load levels, which are customizable based on application needs. The process evaluates both the initial “breakaway” force—the effort required to move a stationary cart—and rolling resistance during sustained motion. These metrics are vital for maintaining operator comfort, particularly under heavy loads.
