The Challenge: Moving a 12-Million-Pound Platform

When NASA needed to transport their Space Shuttle from the Vehicle Assembly Building to the launch pad—over 3.5 miles away—they relied on a behemoth known as the Crawler-Transporter. This massive tracked vehicle had to carry the launch platform and shuttle together weighing over 12 million pounds. Though the crawler itself runs on tracks, the Mobile Launch Platform it carries had to sit on giant, high-capacity swivel casters during certain phases of positioning and assembly.
